The dirty dozen. Do you know that there are twelve fruits and vegetables that you should purchase organically? Why? These twelve foods are more likely to contain pesticide residue than any other foods on the planet. This list is based on studies by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which analyzed the amounts and toxicity of pesticide residue found in foods which are conventionally grown. Note: Although most of these foods don't have pesticide contaminants that exceed the safety limits for food, most do contain multiple pesticide residue. Here is the 2019 list:
What can you do?
1. Grow your own food
2. Buy organic as you are able.
3. Wash and scrub all fresh fruits and vegetables under running water. It's the scrubbing that helps eliminate/remove traces of chemicals. (Same with hand washing) But, not all pesticide residue can be removed by washing.
4. Peel/Trim as much off of fruits and vegetables as you can. This will assist to reduce dirt, bacteria and pesticides. Discard all outer leaves of leafy vegetables.
5. Eat all colors of the rainbow every week. It will give you an improved selection of nutrients and reduce your likelihood of exposure to a single pesticide.
