Today we are going to talk about safe dilutions of essential oils. This post will be presented over several days so that the information doesn't get confusing. A 1 % dilution is 5 to 6 drops per ounce of carrier oil. A carrier oil can be any type of oil, butter, water or gel that the essential oil can be dispersed in. In other words, let's say we have one ounce of olive oil. In order to create a blend with a 1% dilution, we would add 5 or 6 drops of essential oils to that olive oil.
Who should use a 1 % dilution? Adults over 65 years of age with challenging health problems or health problems that are not well controlled can start with a 1% dilution. People that have chronic conditions, immune system disorders, children under 12 and those that have pulmonary (lung) concerns, including sensitivity to fragrances, chemicals or environmental pollutants should proceed carefully with a 1% dilution or consult their physician or clinical aromatherapist. Discontinue if you experience redness, swelling, pain or burning at application site or if you have respiratory problems after application. Wash immediately with soap and water.
We also like to start with a 1% dilution for some of the essential oils which are a bit stronger. On our list would be Rose Absolute, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint, Jasmine Absolute and several others. We feel that a 1% dilution might provide enough aroma for a blend made with these oils.
"Admittedly, I am little crazy about this world we live in, crazy about health and crazy about the wonderful things that essential oils can do to augment health. I love the relationship between the mind, the body and the spirit. I am convinced that we can help soothe, invigorate and balance with essential oils. When all three (mind, body and spirit) harmonize the world is better and we live more fully. Essential oils have therapeutic properties. Inhalation and absorption of essential oils facilitate bodily uptake of essential oils thus therapeutic effects ensue. My goal is to help any way I can with the gentle use of essential oils as a companion to Western Medicine through education and availability.” Polly Schellinger
CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting influenza (flu). The first and most important step is to get a flu vaccination each year. But if you get the flu, there are prescription antiviral drugs that can treat your illness. Early treatment is especially important for the elderly, the very young, people with certain chronic health conditions, and pregnant women. Finally, everyday preventive actions may slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.
How does the flu spread?
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too.
People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those who have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than 5-7 days.
What are everyday preventive actions?
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
• If an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs, follow public health advice. This may include information about how to increase distance between people and other measures.
What additional steps can I take at work to help stop the spread of germs that can cause respiratory illness, like flu?
• Find out about your employer’s plans if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site.
• Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards, and phones, to help remove germs.
• Make sure your workplace has an adequate supply of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs, and disposable wipes.
• Train others on how to do your job so they can cover for you in case you or a family member gets sick and you have to stay home.
• If you begin to feel sick while at work, go home as soon as possible.
What additional preventive actions can I take to protect my child from germs that can cause respiratory illness, like flu?
• Find out about plans your child’s school, child care program, or college has if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site.
• Make sure your child’s school, child care program, or college routinely cleans frequently touched objects and surfaces, and that they have a good supply of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs, and disposable wipes on-site.
• Ask how sick students and staff are separated from others and who will care for them until they can go home.
As always, we suggest that you augment your Western medical care with aromatherapy. Specifically utilize aroma-sticks, sprays, diffuser oils and rollers that have anti-bacterial, anti-viral essential oils in them. Some of our favorites include: Eucalyptus Radiata or Globulus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Honey Myrtle, Ravintsara.
With the surge of virus', bacteria, influenza, coughs and colds we offer this "Immune Pack". We are focusing on immunity for the community. The essential oils included are those that are recognized as protection for the body during those times that our immune systems are threatened. This does not negate the need for conventional medical care (Western Medicine), good handwashing, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and paying attention to your surroundings.
The "Immune Pack" includes four dryer balls with a vial of essential oil that may be used as a cleaning boost, diffused or on the wool dryer balls during laundering. The Immune Roller and Aromastick headline the pack as does a Soap Ball. The Soap Ball touts Eucalyptus Essential Oil as a leading aroma. We are proud to share that we have been creating these products for 15 years and the "immune" blend has been a fan favorite for all of those years.

The house has smelled really wonderful over the last few weeks while i'm trying new recipes that are healthier and offer more nutritional benefits. The amount of carrots and apples in this loaf is substantial and the sugar is minimal. Enjoy!
1 large egg
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1/3 cup olive oil
1/4 cup plain yogurt
1 TBS vanilla extract
1 cup all purpose or whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup grated carrot (I use the peels too)
3/4 cup grated apple (I use the peels too)
Cinnamon, nutmeg to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Mix first five ingredients. Add flour, baking powder and baking soda. Don't overmix. Add spices and carrots/apples. Mix gently. Turn this thick batter into prepared pan. Bake for 55 minutes or until top is golden and toothpick in center comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes and turn out on wire rack. Cool before serving.
Today I made Itch Sticks! They are the best item ever for relief of either bites or dry skin. There is Neem Oil in the Itch Sticks which is great for combating itchy skin. Neem Oil is rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs), triglycerides, vitamin E and calcium. Neem Oil penetrates deep within the skin to heal the minuscule cracks brought on by severe dryness. The skin easily absorbs the fatty acids and vitamin E found in Neem Oil without leaving the skin feeling too greasy. Skin health is rejuvenated through these wonderful attributes.
Say goodbye to itchy skin and hello to less dry nourished skin.
Wisconsin Hands is one of the most popular products in the farm shop. We are going to let the cat out of the bag and share the recipe with you. It's simple and you will enjoy making this at home for yourself, family and friends.
Dead Sea Salt
MCT Oil (also known as fractionated coconut oil)
Place salts in container of choice. Add equal amounts of jojoba oil and MCT oil to container so that salt is immersed in oil blend. The oil blend should cover the salt by about 1/2 inch after the salt has fully absorbed the oils. Use your favorite aroma in a 2% dilution (unless your aroma is very strong then cut back). A 2 % dilution would equal 10-12 drops per ounce of oil blend.
It is a European made product and 100% biodegradable when properly composted because it is made from a natural cotton and wood-based cellulose pulp. The Skoy Cloth is a chlorine-free, unbleached, and non-GMO product using water-based colors and inks. After an independent composting test, Skoy Cloth broke down completely within 5 weeks.
The Skoy Cloth is a durable product due to the reusability factor and can last months. Using a Skoy Cloth is equivalent to using 15 rolls of paper towels in an average home. With the high cost of paper towels, as much as $2 per roll, Skoy Cloth is the obvious choice for your wallet and the environment.
The Skoy Cloth has an absorption factor of 15x its own weight. As a result, producing the most superior cloth product available. Imagine using 15 sheets of good-quality paper towels at once… This is how a wet Skoy Cloth will feel in your hand.
The Skoy Cloth is long-lasting because of the wash-ability feature. It dries quickly, so it is not a breeding ground for bacteria. Have you ever used your sponge, then smelled your hand and it reeked of horrible bacteria? That will never happen again if you microwave your Skoy Cloth regularly. It is also dishwasher and washer/dryer safe. Cleaning your Skoy Cloth will keep it healthy and germ-free.

Add this to 1 ounce of unscented cream, carrier oil or water. It smells fantastic and is sure to lift your spirits.
The white patina on these soaps is actually ash. There are some people that love the ash on the soaps because they think it makes the soap look so authentic, rustic and raw. It can be the real feel and look of handmade soap. Sometimes this happens because the soap gets too warm during processing. It also can happen when soap is too cool when blended. Otherwise, it can be a byproduct of the soap making process. It is harmless.
It can be removed by washing in cold water or steaming the soap with a hand steamer. As you can see, we have a few of these bars and are trialing some of the remedies as well as leaving them just as they are. We are pretty in love with no waste, no change and showing up as you are. We also are crazy about handmade products with great ingredients. The thought of not being perfect in appearance is very appealing!
