I often get asked what the big deal about handmade soap is. A soap is a soap is a soap. RIght? Wrong. When you purchase a bar of handmade soap from The Healing Place Farm you are purchasing something that is unique, free of preservatives and chemicals, made from the best quality oils and essential oils, has no hidden ingredients and is actually good for your skin. Skin is the biggest organ in the body and treating it right will help diminish the harmful effects that are often created by our environment and products we choose to use.
What a handmade bar of soap isn't:
It isn't made from petroleum, alcohol or other harsh chemicals.
It isn't a detergent but a combination of glycerin and a cleansing bar.
It isn't full of preservatives.
It isn't equally made between handmade soap makers.
It isn't the least expensive bar of soap.
It isn't going to leave your skin scaly like an alligator.
Handmade soap is made from a wonderful process called saponification. Saponification is a chemical process between fats and lye (alkali). During this process the ingredients are converted to soap. Then, depending on which oils/fats you choose, your bar will exhibit the therapeutic properties of the oils. This process takes 6 weeks to complete. Handmade soap should sit between 4 and 6 weeks for maximum safety.
In the plants that make the 'Big Box" name brands the process of soap starts out the same way as it does here on the farm. What differs is that during the final phase the glycerin and detergent are separated into two different types of soap. Glycerin bars and Detergent bars. Double pop! So, if you have a glycerin bar you will have moisture but little cleaning. If you use the detergent bar, you won't have moisture but a much denser cleansing bar. And, the aromas in said soaps....synthetics. I, myself, want the whole package which is what drove me to make the break from store bought soaps.
While I know that there are some stores that do have the "cut your own bar" from a large loaf of soap option. These bars look like genuine handmade soap. This option doesn't sit right with me either. My concern with those is that I would like to know who held the loaf of soap with what on their hands before me. I suspect that that is the nurse coming out in me but we all know that there are numerous bugs out there that can be shared via the hands.
Most wonderful of all about handmade soap....the process is biodegradable. It doesn't harm the environment. Clean isn't clean any more. Know what you are putting on your skin and choose the healthy alternative. Very simply the bottom line is that a 3 month supply of soap has an equivalent monetary cost to your favorite daily specialty drink.. Soap made simple. A daily choice.
